Grooming January 16, 2018

January,  16 2018;  Grooming Report

Forestville Real Grooming Report:  Five inches of fluffy snow is being rolled by Bob.  The plan is to start on the Noque and Animoosh to 17k and work out from there.  Classic tracks will be set as time permits.  Bob is alone today.  A full reset will take place tomorrow.

Way Too Long Grooming Report:    Those of you that did heed the call were greeted by spectacular skiing.  I know it was only groomed to 17k but the section from 17k to 510 was so wonderful that superlatives are inadequate.  One can not say a given painting or artist is “the best” I feel compelled to add flavor.  All too often skiers are looking for “race ready” conditions.  Well, who is to say what it will be on race day.  The first time I every skied more than 30k was when Joe and Wally drug (sic) me to the Great Bear Chase.  It snowed 8” during the race.  Picking my ski tip to clear the snow for the last 10k made my ham string want to roll up like a window shade.  And, who can forget the last Red Earth Loppet; snow was a foot deep by race end.  Twice around a 25k loop is mental cruelty.  I had to actually look at my car after the first lap.  Of course, dropping out would mean leaving town in shame and humiliation.  Old ungroomed snow is a different story but skiing on 3” of fresh fluff is like being on a cloud.  Silently gliding down the hills beyond 20k made the snow blow away from skis in swirls of spin drift.  Steady snow fell all afternoon in the calm air.  It was spectacular.  There were quite a few tracks at the 510 trail head.  So, if you were out doing some fine tuning looking for a personal best in a fortnight or just gauging your odds of survival; good on ya.   I know some of you are saying, “so much TV, so little time”. But, if you were on the couch with a tin of foie gras, you missed a great day.

Saux Head: The trail system was groomed and track set  Saturday.

Fit Strip: The Fit Strip is groomed weekly.  The Fit Strip located in the Marquette Park Cemetery is open for skiing.  Parking is at the west end of the 800 block of Ridge Street.

Big Bay Pathway: Big Bay ski trail was groomed Saturday.  Track has been set on Meditation and Hidden Grin trails.  Bear Mountain remains ungroomed at this time.
