Noquemanon Trails Network Strategic Initiatives 2014-2020

Below is a compilation of bullet points that represent the Noquemanon Trails Network’s strategic priorities for the next several years.

To achieve these goals requires collaboration and insight from our partners at local municipalities and development organizations. We hope you will take a few minutes to familiarize yourself and colleagues with the document. It may act as an aide to planning the future of our unique and beautiful region.

NTN Organization

  • Achieve financial sustainability through aggressive marketing
  • Build a $200,000 sinking fund
  • Conduct a well defined capital campaign by 2016
  • Increase overall membership by 50% to 2000 individuals by 2020
  • Secure permanent easements for all major corridors
  • Enhance leadership role in the silent sport community by  involvement in summits/legislation
  • Develop cooperative strategies with non motorized entities ie. IOHT, NCT, Range MBT
  • Work with municipalities to establish safe road crossings
  • Encourage municipalities to include non-motorized trails in recreation and strategic plans.
  • Ensure succession planning by recruiting energetic-visionary community members to the NTN Board

 

Ski Operations

  • Enhance “xc ski destination” reputation in major markets such as Twin Cities, Chicago, Milwaukee, etc
  • Partner with Marquette MCCVB to create desirable travel packages (hotel, meals, shuttle, ski pass)
  • Insure consistent high quality grooming every day
  • Plan and Build an FIS certified race venue at Forestville.
  • Develop an improved customer service culture at the Forestville Trailhead
  • Improve Nordic membership services
  • Build on-trail amenities such as warming shelters
  • Improve Forestville trailhead facility to enhance ambience
  • Support Noquemanon Skijor Club
  • Create new relationships with community developers

 

Single Track

  • Complete trail head funding project: Pavilion, parking lot, bathrooms
  • Obtain IMBA “Ride Center” designation
  • Develop inaugural “Marquette Trails Festival” June 6-8, 2014
  • Enhance Marquette’s reputation as the “Fat Tire/ Snow Bike Capital of the World”
  • Develop marketing strategy in collaboration with MCCVB
  • Construct new trails to achieve “100 miles of ST” by 2020
  • Improve trail mapping in cooperation with YMCA
  • Establish safe crossing north-south connection across US 41 through landowner negotiations
  • Circumnavigate the City of Marquette from the Carp River to the Dead River
  • Encourage a presence at any/all snow bike summits/expos ie. Cable, WI (January 2014)
  • Stage the Noquemanon World Championship Snow Bike Race (January 26, 2014)

 

 

Events Division

 

  • Provide leadership and continuity among events; Noquemanon Ski Marathon, Ore to Shore Mountain Bike Epic, Marquette Trail 50 Ultra, XTERRA Triathlon, Marquette Marathon,  Marquette Trails Festival
  • Foster community support of NTN’s mission by creating synergies among our events
  • Increase participation in existing events: 2013 =4950 participants, 2014=6000
  • Improve the quality of the equipment used to manage events to state-of-the-art
  • Obtain long term trail use easements/agreements
  • Develop safer access points in critical areas such as City of Marquette, Negaunee and Ishpeming
  • Hire full time event management staff
  • Expand the menu of events that are consistent with NTN’s mission

 

Marquette Marathon

 

  • Triple participation by 2018  to 3000
  • Attain USA Track and Field certification for the marathon course
  • Secure a title sponsor for the ½ marathon
  • Develop new running events such as Santa 5k, Boston Strong Memorial run, etc
  • Offer cash prizes for full and ½ marathons
  • Hire part time staff and pacers for ½ and full marathon
  • Bid on the Master’s Championships
  • Organize a Marquette Marathon Running Club to provide training runs and promote wellness in the community

 

Marquette Trail 50 Ultramarathon

  • Double ultrarunning participation by 2020.
  • Bid on USA Track and Field 50K Trail Run National Championship
  • Increase regional and national sponsorships for 50 Mile, 50 Kilometer, Team Relay, and Kids Races
  • Promote local health and wellness through group training trail runs
  • Organize a Marquette Trail Running Club to support trail races and other running events
  • Increase monetary support to the trail networks for building and maintaining trails
  • Organize a Spring Ultramarathon and other trail running events as part of a series
  • Collaborate with other silent sport organizations, including a “Yooper” Tough Trophy Series (Ski, Bike, Run, Other) Championships.
